Saxophonist and clarinetist Gustavo Firmenich, leader of the TJQ, has recreated with this group dances during
TJQ revisits past golden ages in Buenos Aires, where tango and jazz coexisted but were played separately. The Quartet explores what the two genres have in common and adds something distinctive of jazz that was lacking in tango – improvisation.
With 20 international tours and more than 25 countries visited, TJQ has performed in the most prestigious venues of the world, where its musical concept has very well received by very different audiences.
World-renowned French accordionist Richard Galliano said of the Tango Jazz Quartet – “This is the first time I’ve heard a fusion of Jazz and Tango that works and makes sense”.
TJQ are led by Gustavo Firmenich on tenor sax and clarinet. The other members are Horacio Acosta (piano), Federico Hilal electric bass) and Alejandro Beelmann (drums).
Tango Jazz Quartet will be leading a workshop before their performance, at the Melville Centre from 12 noon to 1pm. The workshop is an opportunity to learn more about TJQ’s music style and it is open to any musician.

There is no charge for the workshop, although donations to our Tŷ Hafan pledge will be gratefully received and passed on.
