Jazz pianist/composer/educator/author Dave Jones leads a 2-hour workshop on jazz improvisation for all instruments.
This particular session is aimed at those who are in the early to intermediate stages of learning to improvise in a jazz context, and there’ll be an opportunity to play alongside other learners in a small group situation, on a chosen jazz ‘standard’ or two.
Dave will explain various approaches to utilising particular scales or groups of notes when improvising over a given chord sequence, with an emphasis on creating strong melodic phrases, which are at the heart of any good improvised solo in jazz.
A pianos and a keyboard will be provided for this workshop, but those who play other instruments will need to bring them, along with any required amplification.
Dave Jones is a highly experienced and qualified tutor who has an MA in Jazz performance and Studio Composition, and a PGCE (PCET) teaching qualification.
He has taught in many contexts and at all levels. He has also authored a BA (Hons.) module in Improvisation. He is a critically acclaimed pianist and composer, having performed extensively worldwide and released numerous albums.
Dave has had compositions used in various TV productions, including The Big Bang Theory, The US Open Golf tournament, and Location – Location – Location.
He writes for Pianist magazine and Jazz Journal, providing in-magazine improvisation lessons, and reviews of Books, CDs, and live events.
