Jazz for Little’uns

This will be the 4th time we have included Jazz for Little’uns in our programmes and it has proved to be very popular and feedback suggests we should continue to run these sessions.

Jazz for Little’uns is for those aged 2 to 5 years (with some flexibility).  The session introduces the fun of movement and jazz music for youngsters to enjoy, listen to and join in.

Popular vocalist Naomi Rae will again run the session – having done so in the past with great success.  She has been very popular with little’uns and a similar fun session can be expected.

The session will start at 12 noon and last about one hour. Light refreshments will be available.

Little’uns must be accompanied by an adult throughout the session.

Tickets can be bought via our online box office – please see the link button in the left column.

Youth Workshop Band

Initial plans that offered young musicians keen on jazz the chance to perform with Dennis Rollins, one of the world’s great trombonists, at the wall2wall Jazz Festival this year have had to be postponed.

However, Dennis will still be leading a half day (10am to 2pm) workshop for young musicians (teens and early 20s) on Friday August 30th.

The workshop will best suit those with a musical ability at about Grade 4/5 or higher.

There is no charge for joining the workshop and if you are interested in taking part, please call Mike on 0795 8612691.

Our thanks to Abergavenny Town Council for a grant that helps to  include this and re-scheduled workshops, plus Jazz for Little’uns, in our programmes.

Tango Jazz

Tango Jazz Quartet (TJQ

Prior to their performance (2pm), Tango Jazz Quartet will be leading a workshop at the Melville Centre from 12 noon to 1pm.

The workshop is an opportunity to learn more about TJQ’s music style and it is open to any musician.

Tickets are not available via our box office but for details and to book a place on the workshop, please email info@blackmountainjazz.co.uk – or call Mike on 07958 612691.

There is no charge for the workshop, although donations on the day to our Tŷ Hafan pledge will be gratefully received and passed on.

Gospel Singing

The Renewal Choir is a well-established community gospel choir that was founded in September 2005. There are now over 70 choir members, ranging from youthful teens through to a number of energetic seniors still young at heart!

During the afternoon before its performance (4.15pm), the Renewal Choir will run a workshop for all who would like to join them for an enjoyable session of gospel singing.  This will be between 12 noon and 3.15pm (with refreshment breaks).

Tickets can be bought via our online box office – please see the link button in the left column.

Jazz Improvisation

Jazz pianist/composer/educator/author Dave Jones leads a 2-hour (7pm to 9pm) workshop on jazz improvisation for all instruments.

This particular session is aimed at those who are in the early to intermediate stages of learning to improvise in a jazz context, and there’ll be an opportunity to play alongside other learners in a small group situation, on a chosen jazz ‘standard’ or two.

Dave will explain various approaches to utilising particular scales or groups of notes when improvising over a given chord sequence, with an emphasis on creating strong melodic phrases, which are at the heart of any good improvised solo in jazz.

A pianos and a keyboard will be provided for this workshop, but those who play other instruments will need to bring them, along with any required amplification.

Tickets can be bought via our online box office – please see the link button in the left column.
